Citizens for Flood Safety (CFS) is a wide coalition of citizens, property owners, community leaders, environmentalists and businesspeople founded to support the urgently needed improvements to Sacramento’s safeguards against natural disaster.
CFS supported more flood protection in 2000, when 82% of Sacramento voters cast ballots to invest in a first round of levee, dam, and watershed improvements. Over the past 6 years, the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency has used these dollars to strengthen levees to prevent seepage that weaken them during times of high flows. They continue searching for further weaknesses, armoring weak spots and designing strategies to cope with even larger floods.
But in spite of this intense effort, we must do more to protect our community. We all saw how inadequate levees collapsed in New Orleans, and standing waters caused not only damage and death, but isolated the community for days, destroying the local economy.
Currently, much of Sacramento is only protected from storms big enough that they have a 1-in-100 chance of coming in any year. We want the peace of mind that comes with a 200-year level of flood safety.
